Halloween is not just a holiday in and of itself, it is also the beginning of the best two-month stretch of the year. And on a practical note, masks are already a big part of the holiday, which is terribly convenient.
There are a couple of possible options. We could all agree to put candy out in bowls or on platters, which if spaced well, would decrease the risk of two kids touching the same mini-Snickers. Prefilled and wrapped bowls and trays could easily be put out “untouched.” It would also be feasible to hide candy or treat bags in a front yard “graveyard.” Kids could go to tombstones to pick up candy instead of one bowl or platter, “Easter egg” style. This would let multiple kids find treat bags while maintaining distancing.
Another option would be to have all of the candy distributors masked, and using a pair of tongs to drop candy into bags. Those handing out candy can incorporate masks into their costumes. Some creative examples gifted to me were fortune teller and mad doctor. Of course, the safest thing to do would be not to pass out candy, and just enjoy the parades of tiny monsters. In this scenario, parents would be responsible for providing the sugar high.
Sadly, Haunted Houses seem a bit more problematic, since they often involve close quarters and even touching. However, there are some drive-through haunted houses that have sprung into being thanks to initiative and the true spirits of the season, so check your area; you could end up with a hook stuck in the roof of your car. And speaking of cars, Trunk or Treat is an option where families do up the vehicle often as part of a family themed costume. These events are often held in central spaces such as parking lots, but it would also be possible to organize one for your street or neighborhood.
With proper precautions, there’s no need to let the real scare we’re experiencing ruin the pretend ones we love.
