Hang that unmasked head in shame
Yesterday a spirited group of rebels decided not to wear masks when venturing out in public. Some of the really free thinkers actually set their masks on fire. I suppose they’ll be doing Science Journals in October. To those who participated, do know that if you were running around in public to show us that you can’t be controlled, and that you will assert your freedom at all costs, up to and including the lives of others you should hang your head in shame. You are the reason we’re not done with this. You are the reason that we’re still wearing masks, still staying home, still wondering whether it’s safe to send our children to school. You are not freedom fighters you are a boil on the backside of society. There are so many stories of anti-maskers and conspiracy theorists who think COVID is a hoax, or a fantasy rooted in the paranoia of health nuts who have themselves become infected. Which is certainly one way to gain perspective. But since we don’t want to be monsters, and since there are ways to find empathy and ethics that don’t involve infection, let’s not wish that on anyone. Because doing so would be wrong. Not as wrong as actually taking actions that put others are risk, but wrong nonetheless. How about we all just practice a bare minimum of concern for others even if their viewpoints don’t match our own. Let’s drive the speed limit just in case there’s a kid crossing the street. Here’s hoping that each of us can find some way to put the health and safety of our fellow citizens over mild inconvenience to ourselves.
